This course has been designed to give these employees insight into the general aspects of a breeding program. It provides them with background knowledge relevant to their own tasks.

Target Audience

  • Trial field employees, crop maintenance employees and breeding assistants.
  • Employees in seed production, laboratories, and others who need some understanding of the background and structure of a breeding program.

Objective

To familiarize participants with the fundamental concepts and basic techniques of genetics and plant breeding.

Program

The program is tailored to the company and participants.It includes:

  • Genetics (pollination and fertilization, Mendel's laws)
  • Genetics and environment
  • Breeding objectives, genetic variation, backcrossing programs
  • Selection methods for different crops
  • Resistance breeding
  • Seed production and processing
  • Structure and function of DNA, introduction to biotechnology

Pre requisites
A basic education in biology and employment at a breeding/selection company.
