At a breeding company, many employees are not directly involved in the breeding process but are still interested in understanding, in broad terms, how a new variety is developed. Often, these employees do not come from the agricultural sector. We provide an overview of the entire process, from "gene to euro."
Target Audience:
Employees who are not directly involved in breeding but work with the final product, such as commercial staff, policy advisors, legal professionals, executive assistants, IT department staff, and HR personnel.
Objective:
To gain insight into the various activities within a breeding company, the purpose of these activities, and the theoretical background behind them.
Program:
The program includes:
- Botany: Growth and development of a plant, plant life cycle
- Genetics: Reproduction, genetic material, Mendel’s laws, heredity and environment
- Plant Breeding: Definition of a variety, breeding process, crossing, selection, resistance breeding
- Biotechnology: Structure and function of DNA, tissue culture, molecular markers, genetic transformation
- Laws and Regulations: Plant breeders’ rights, certification, and legal frameworks
- Excursions: Theoretical concepts will be illustrated through on-site company visits.
Schedule and Duration:3-4 sessions, 1 to 2 sessions per week.
